Groundhog Day was earlier this month and Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see his shadow, which, as the legend goes, means we’re in for early spring! Let’s hope his prediction was right. In the meantime, February is a great month to start planning your spring getaway on Cape Cod! While the area swells to full capacity in the heat of the summer, experienced tourists and locals know that spring on the Cape bustles with the energy of renewal and offers the benefit of smaller crowds. Hyannis is a charming destination in the heart of Cape Cod and the perfect place to call home while on your spring Cape Cod getaway!
Here are just a few reasons to visit Hyannis in the spring:
1. The Fresh Spring Air
While springtime is still too chilly to sunbathe on the Cape’s beaches, the cooler temperatures make it the perfect time to go for a hike or bike ride. A short drive from Hyannis, the Shining Sea Bikeway follows the route of a former railroad line run by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company, which ran service to New York and Boston from 1872 to 1965. After the railroad discontinued service on the line, the 10.7-mile bike path was created. Today, the Shining Sea Bikeway is one of the most scenic bike paths in New England, boasting gorgeous views of the seaside, marshes, and rivers. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is another example of railroad repurposing. This trail is the perfect place to enjoy the spring scenery and fresh air, following the path of an old railroad through Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet, with several off ramps to exit to beaches and neighborhoods. Bike rentals are available at multiple locations around both trails.
2. St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and welcome spring with the annual Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The two-mile long parade has a route through parts of Dennis and Yarmouth and features bands and floats along with plenty of family-friendly activities. To truly get into the spirit of the festive Irish holiday, enjoy a night of entertainment and delicious fare at the Cape Codder Resort & Spa’s Dinner Theater. March shows include Finnegan’s Wake, an interactive Celtic comedy.
3. Island Hopping
The warmer weather makes spring a great season to explore Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, two island jewels located just off the coast of Cape Cod. These beautiful islands boast charming boutique shops, beautiful beaches, picturesque towns, and historic lighthouses. Both islands are a short ferry ride away from Hyannis.
4. Whale Watching
Spring is the perfect time to head out to sea for the chance to catch a glimpse of some of the ocean’s most majestic creatures. Whale watching season begins in mid-April as hundreds of the gentle giants migrate to their summer feeding grounds off the coast of Massachusetts. The Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruise departs daily from picturesque Barnstable Harbor. On the cruise, you’ll have the chance to see humpback whales, as well as pilot, finback, minke and sei whales. It’s also likely that you’ll see dolphins, sharks, sunfish, blue fin tuna and more while on your cruise! The spring months can still be quite chilly out on the water, so be sure to dress in layers so you can enjoy the experience.
